Tail Lamp - Readers' Letters Standing outside the erecting shop at Crewe Works, after being overhauled and repainted, is Ivatt '2MT 2-6-2T No 41234. With Crewe being strategically important during World War II, with five main lines radiating to London, Shrewsbury. North Wales, the north-west and Scotland, and Manchester, the buildings at the Locomotive Works were camouflaged with multi-coloured paint to make identification from the air difficult. The remnants of this paint scheme can be seen here on the gable walls in front of the locomotive, which had itself been built at the Works in August 1949. J. B. Tootal Broadhurst on its home shed of Crewe North just prior to being withdrawn from service.
