STEAM DAYS in Colour 43: Crewe - Crewe was one of the busiest stations in England, and with its huge Locomotive Works and two large engine sheds was a Mecca for the railway enthusiast and professional alike. Tail Lamp - Readers' Letters Standing outside the erecting shop at Crewe Works, after being overhauled and repainted, is Ivatt '2MT 2-6-2T No 41234. With Crewe being strategically important during World War II, with five main lines radiating to London, Shrewsbury. North Wales, the north-west and Scotland, and Manchester, the buildings at the Locomotive Works were camouflaged with multi-coloured paint to make identification from the air difficult. The remnants of this paint scheme can be seen here on the gable walls in front of the locomotive, which had itself been built at the Works in August 1949. J. B. Bucknall Cover: In this issue of the magazine in our all-colour photo feature we pay a visit to Crewe. In April 1964 we see LMS 'Patriot' class 4-6-0 No 45534 E.
