COCK-EYED: OUR surmise in last week's issue hit the nail squarely on the head, unfortunately. The minimum age for riding bikes over 50 cc is to be raised to 17. Full details are given on pages 954 and 955. This is a cock-eyed decision. The weight of advice behind it is from theorists with no recent motor-cycle experience and statisticians who have provided figures but, assuming they were given the opportunity to comment, have failed to interpret them properly. No experienced rider can see any advantage in postponing the starting age. Neither can the independent experts on road safety, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Enlightened opinion is more than opposed to this change. It advocates the reverseÃÃ
