Welcome
What's that expression? Go big or go home... Well, it looks like Corgi has certainly kicked off the new year/decade, with that philosophy in mind, issuing a 100-page A4 catalogue to showcase its 2020 line-up. The catalogue is priced at £4.99, which initially made me frown, as I am not a fan of catalogues the customer is asked to pay for (although this is clearly nothing new, as Dinky, Corgi Toys, etc, all did it back in the day - albeit for pennies rather than £s). However, having now seen a copy, I have to admit it is worth shelling out for, as along with the images and details of the models being marketed there are some fascinating potted histories relating to the vehicles/aircraft they're based on, and clearly a lot of time, work and expense has gone into putting it together. At 12-pages, our coverage is far more modest, but it does include pre-production sample/first shot and digitally rendered images of, and basic info on, almost all of the announced but yet to be released models, with the exception of the newly tooled 1:1250 scale Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales Class aircraft carriers, Ref. CC75000 and CC75001 respectively, and the additions to the award winning toy series Chunkies and the Showcase, Best of British, Coca-Cola, etc, collections. If we'd run all the images in our photo special at a much smaller size we probably could have squeezed them in, but as this hobby is so detail focused we've decided instead to take a 'less is more' approach. Keep a close eye on MC's news pages going forward though, as some additional surprises for 2020 have been promised.
In the meantime, in next month's issue I'll be reporting back from the annual London and Nuremberg toyfairs on the models other manufacturers currently have in the pipeline and will be releasing over the course of the year ahead. I am, therefore, bracing myself for yet another massive wave of temptation. My finances, however, would be in much better shape were it not for the fact that I'll have to budget for a new kitchen floor at some point soon, thanks to the awful job done by the tradesman who laid the current one, at considerable expense, less than a year ago. For me, Corgi has really hit the nail on the head with the 'Bodgit and Scarper' Ford Transit in its new Tools of the Trade series (see p. 32). Grr... Wish I had 007's licence to kill! On the subject of which, I didn't think I could be excited about yet another Aston Martin DB5 model, but it's great to see a replica of the original 1960s' Corgi Toys' Goldfinger DB5, complete with all working features/ gadgets, period box and the 'Top Secret' instruction sheet (see p. 34), set to join the range.
Finally, on a more serious note, please visit specialauctionservices to look at the OttOmobile/GT Spirit ex-MC review samples that will be included in SAS's February 11 sale, as all the money raised by the 20 lots on offer will be donated to the Australian bushfires relief fund. Time for me to wrap up, as I am running out of space again (a situation I'm sure most of you, as collectors, will be all too familiar with!).
Enjoy your read...
