A common theme with wargamers is often: "what period next? " and in 2021 we have the luxury of a cornucopia of options. I was reviewing the latest releases by PSC of their Northag models in 10mm (see later on in Defence in Depth) and it got me a-thinking that I've always been fascinated by the 'cold war' period and it set me to wondering why that was... The best conclusion I could come up with
was with the inevitable passage of time along side my love of alternative history. When I was young the possibility of a hot war in Europe with the technology of the '70s (or even the future tech of the postulated '80s and '90s) was all a "what might be", bordering almost on SF. Now, of course, for me the thought provoking part is largely a "what might have been". Just before everything got turned into self illuminating rubble, I mean... I do find the border where alternative history meets reality to be an area of continued fascination so I guess it's a period I'll have to get to painting sometime soon. While I'm doing that I'll pick some suitable music to listen to. As Ian
Anderson sang: "The tall General will mine a few bridges tonight, stroking soft machinery. Tanfare at dawn, courting green steel, lined up for World War One (Two, Three, Four)."
