Cover Picture by Pat Hosford - With this issue. Pat Hosford joins the very select band who have been responsible for the cover illustration of LLAS on more than one occasion. As the descriptwn of same is well covered in Pat's accompanying article entitled "Treat in the Woods", let me instead say something about the exploits of Pat as a photographer, of which I have two personal and very vivid experiences. Pat was our first international visitor at the Isle of Wight Locomotive Rally some years ago now and proceeded to make a photographic record of the day. Then last year he returned to the Island after his stint of firing on the Festmiog Railway and I was able to show him something of our Railway at Havenstreet. Actually it proved to be an object lesson for yours truly, for Pat proceeded to show me how to pick locations for taking photographs, opening a few other eyes in the process, such that we were quickly issued with high visibility jackets by Len Pullinger to avoid the wrath of authority. Judging by the results I achieved that day, I have the feeling that Pat has a future LLAS cover among the film he exposed.
Apart from his obvious skill as a photographer, Pat is to be congratulated for his 'investigative journalism' in tracking down what must be a fairly unique operation by Canfor on Vancouver Island. He has now moved on to Winnipeg, teamed up with Bob Harris on the Prairie Dog Central, thus I await his next report with enthusiasm!
