Cover Pictures by Ray Cross - It seems to be coming tradition that a select band are providing the cover illustrations for LLAS, this being Ray's fourth appearance going back to No. 5 for November 1980. For some unknown reason, that cover picture failed to reproduce as it should, so now there is double opportunity to set things right! Possibly uniquely in the world today, all 14 members of the ex-South Maitland Railways '10' Class locomotives survive today, the class leader No. 10 depicted here being built by Beyer Peacock in 1911. Ray has been involved with the '10' class for much of his life, something that continues today with the restoration of No. 10 to full working order, but this represents the calm after the storm, a story which includes piracy and flying the Southern Cross, something that has made Ray almost a household name on Australian TV. It is a story that involves treachery by fellow employees and others, one that left a nasty taste in the mouth for several years, thus although Ray agreed some time ago to tell the story in LLAS, it has been necessary to mend some bridges ahead of this and allow some of the wounds to heal, for Ray was right at the centre of events. I will not steal anymore of his thunder, simply say that the manuscript is complete and is only awaiting suitable illustration ahead of publication ÃÃ
