FALKLANDS REVISITED To mark this, our first Remembrance Issue and the drawing to a close of the Falklands 25 events, Tim Lynch, himself a veteran of the Falklands War, describes a memorable return to the Islands. This trip to the South Atlantic battlefields produced a variety of emotions, recollections and thoughts. Amongst the rock outcrops on Mount Longdon were these remembrance crosses - one for each of the 3 Para dead from the fighting at this location. So fierce was the engagement that the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment won numerous decorations for bravery - including the Victoria Cross that was awarded to Sergeant Ian McKay. ESCAPE OR DIE Ken Wright, tells the sad story of the execution, together, of four men, two British and two Australian, following the fall of Singapore in 1942. U-BOAT WAR CRIMES Once a week, every week, throughout the First World War, a British naval officer in the Admiralty brought up-to-date a list. In U-Boat War Crimes Kendall McDonald explains that this list was the tally of war crimes committed by German U-boat captains. SCARECROW PATROL We take a look at some of the desperate measures which RAF Coastal Command was forced to adopt on the outbreak of the Second World War in an effort to combat the U-boat threat. NEVER FORGET In keeping with our remembrance theme, we provide an insight into the poppy and its introduction after the First World War - a sign then of new life, a symbol now of remembrance. THE THANKFUL VILLAGES We examine the small number of villages which are so called - by virtue of the fact that all the men and women, who left to serve in the First World War, returned. SCOUTING VCs This year is the Centenary of the Scouting movement. To celebrate this anniversary, Tony Pay takes a look at how Scouting was in the blood of four military heroes, each of whom was awarded a Victoria Cross - Britain's highest award for gallantry. DEADLY CONSEQUENCES John Grehan tells of the Bari disaster in 1943. If you prepare for the worst then whatever happens cannot be quite so bad. That at least is the theory. But when the Allies planned to invade German-held Italy in 1943, they prepared for the worst - and it happened! DATAFILE This month's Datafile, The Unofficial Lend-Lease, is a look at how ordinary Americans came together to donate firearms, and other equipment, to Britain - donations which helped arm the Home Guard. IMAGE OF WAR How a pig from a German warship found a new home, and role as ship's mascot, on a British warship. CAMERA AT WAR A collection of photographs which show how, by the evening of 5 January 1941, British and Australian forces in North Africa were being forced to confront a problem they had not previously encountered since the start of the war - how to deal with large numbers of enemy Prisoners of War.
