BOMBER COMMAND NOSE ART With this year being the 50th anniversary of the formation of what is now known as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, it was decided that the unit's much-loved Avro Lancaster should be repainted in the colours of one of the most distinguished aircraft to serve in Bomber Command - the Phantom of the Ruhr. As Brian Freer explains in Bomber Command Nose Art, such decorations were not uncommon on British aircraft and can be used to uncover much of the service of an individual aircraft. At the same time, nose art can serve to provide a visual and lasting memorial of these bombers and the bravery of the crews that flew them. GET ME MATES OUT! Late one afternoon in November 1943, a Heinkel He 111 and a Junkers Ju 88 flew low across the runway at Polebrook airfield - moments later the Heinkel stalled and crashed to the ground. From the burning aircraft came a desperate call for help to the US ground crew nearby. As Iris Rowe discovered, the shout from the German Heinkel had a surprisingly English ring: "Get Me Mates Out!" WINNING THE AIRWAVES Robert Mitchell tells the story of the real secret of the Dieppe raid and the attack on the Bruneval radar station. DER TAG Mark Simmons investigates the surrender of German warships, and subsequent scuttling of no less than fifty-one of their number, at Scapa Flow after the end of the First World War. WHEN BRITAIN (ALMOST) BECAME FRANCE John Grehan, explores a suggestion made in 1940 that could have had an almost unbelievable consequence. WARTIME AIRFIELD CONSTRUCTION David Smith takes a look at what has been described as Britain's greatest ever civil engineering project. BLACK SATURDAY Peter Stansky explains how Saturday 7 September 1940 was a crucial date in the history of the Second World War. HARD TARGET Mark Khan describes how a handful of Sherman tanks still remain 'in service' with the British Army - albeit as Range Targets. FINNISH FORAY The fascinating story of a secret RAF mission to Finland in 1940. DISASTER AT MORECAMBE A look at a devastating accident at the White Lund shelling filling factory near Morecambe in October 1917. THE THRASHER INCIDENT On 28 March 1915 a little known passenger ship of the, the S.S. Falaba, was sunk by a German U-boat. Whilst the facts behind her sinking have almost been lost in the mists of time, the implications of the attack may have been far more wide-reaching. CAMERA AT WAR A set of images depicting H.M.G. Boche-Buster. DATAFILE This month's Datafile, The Unofficial Lend-Lease, is the second part of a look at how ordinary Americans came together to donate firearms, and other equipment, to Britain - donations which helped arm the Home Guard.
