WELCOME to a seasonal Steam World that is full of festive treats - a Christmas ghost story, two pages of book and video reviews, a bumper mailbag and details of how to get your 2003 calendar in next month's issue. But there's also an end-of-year valedictory air, with no fewer than four series coming to an end. Memorable footplate trips also looms large in several articles this month - R.H.N. Hardy on a Bulleid 4-6-2, Harry Friend on an 'A1' and Terry Essery describing a Fowler 2-6-4T's assault on the Lickey. The steep grades of the Cromford & High Peak and Valley routes of South Wales also asked a lot of the locomotives, as recalled in articles by Peter Gater and Chris Gammell. With the final parts of the series by Stan Hall, Neil Sprinks and David Thrower - on the Maunsell 'Moguls' - and picture features on York and Ayr, we hope it will provide plenty of useful Yuletide reading. Meanwhile, the Steam World team sends its best wishes to all our loyal readers for a most enjoyable Christmas,
