Stupid Stunts: Years ago I thought Greenpeace were cool. I was a member because I felt that whales should be able to swim freely in the world's oceans without having to face factory whaling ships that hunted these fantastic mammals in a ruthless, industrial way. I remember being appalled when representatives of the French establishment deliberately sank Greenpeace's ship Rainbow Warrior, killing one of the crew in New Zealand because the ship had been protesting the French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. I was ashamed to discover I was a member of the same international canoe club as one of the perpetrators of the sinking. Now, I think Greenpeace sucks. Saving the whales and attempting to stop nuclear testing seem like noble and worthwhile causes, while having its activists chain themselves to the Range Rover production line smacks of being a cheap publicity stunt. If an organisation has to resort to stupid stunts to further its cause, one can be forgiven for questioning the veracity of the campaign at all. This stunt conveniently ignores the fact that vilifying one type of car, the 4x4, is simply not going to deal with the problem of traffic in towns or climate change. Car manufacturers are moving towards cleaner and deaner engines and alternative fuels in the form of . LPG have long been popular with the 4x4 fraternity. Doing anything that might damage a large Midlands employer by singling it out seems naive and selfish to the point of criminal stupidity. Is getting a few minutes on the news and a few criminal records really going to change anything at all? And finally, is attacking Land Rover really the best option when its products transport conservation agencies to far flung corners of the world in order to conserve everything from lions and elephants to National Trust land around Britain?
