Front Cover - The Trains Illustrated "Westcountryman" excursion of September 20, 1958, crosses Meldon Viaduct behind Class "T9" 4-4-0s Nos. 30712 and 30726, en route from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton (see poge 635)
Also included is a colour plate:- The Stroudley scene: at Horley on the London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1899. A Victoria-Eastbourne express headed by William Stroudley's 0-4-2 locomotive G'odstone passes on the through line, while a "D" class 0-4-2T in charge of a slow train waits at the down platform. The leading carriage in the express is a six-wheel third class painted in standard livery followed by a first class repainted in experimental colours.
