GWR 2-8-0 '47xx' on passenger trains Normally nocturnal and confined to freight trains, the nine Churchward-designed '47xx' GWR 2-8-0s introduced from 1919 were elusive locomotives at the best of times for enthusiasts. However, their 5ft 5in driving wheels - the same as a 'Grange' - made them a true mixed-traffic design and summer Saturdays could find them on passenger trains, as recalled by R.C. Riley.
