Farewell to Steam over Shap - Steve Bartlett recalls the summer of 1967 over Shap when despite the ' end of steam being barely a year away it was still well in evidence on freight and Summer Saturday passenger services. The LNER 'H17'A8' tank engines - Chris Andrews reviews a former North Eastern Railway 4-4-4T class of locomotive that was converted to a 4-6-2T wheel arrangement by the LNER in the 1930s and re-classified 'A8'. Here we see one of them, Riddles Standard '4MT 4-6-0 No 75037, working hard at the rear of a freight as it passes the summit in October 1967.
Steam working over Shap went out with a flourish in December 1967. One of the highlights of the last days was the use of BR 'Britannia' Pacific No 70013 Oliver Cromwell on a return Carlisle to Blackpool football special on Boxing Day 1967. Photographed in this issue north of Penrith at Great Strickland, No 70013 is being worked very hard, much to the delight of the photographer and the crew whose last run with steam this might have been.
