Trains of Thought

Steam Days at Grimsby - Alf Ludlam looks at the steam era in and around the busy fishing port of Grimsby, where in early years Great Northern trains rubbed shoulders with those of the Great Central Railway, and where a railway-owned tramway ran through the town's streets.

The NBR's Reid 'J35' and 'J37' 0-6-0s at work - An illustrated review by David Anderson of the workings and duties of two classes of North British Railway 0-6-Os from their early days to their eventual demise in the 1960s.

The House of Windsor - In this, the Golden Jubilee Year of Queen Elizabeth II, Steam Days Magazine provides a fitting tribute to our Royal Family and the House of Windsor, with a little history and illustrations of some of the locomotives which were named after members of the House of Windsor and some Royal Events.

Inter-Regional Working at Oxford in the 1950s - Roger Eckersley looks back to the early 1950s and the busy Oxford station, where a plethora of trains called at and passed through between the North of England, the Midlands, and the South Coast Resorts in addition to local trains and those to and from Paddington.

The Conway Valley Branch - Stanley C. Jenkins provides an illustrated potted history of this rural ex-L&NWR North Wales branch line from the coast, at Llandudno, into the slate-quarrying region of Blaenau Festiniog, and describes the line's train services.

Cover: Depicting an ex-NBR 0-6-0 at work, on the Dundee & Aberdeen Joint line between Arbroath and Dundee, in May 1966 we see the 13.30 Dundee to Montrose freight, which includes a flat wagon, wagons of coal, box vans, and a tank wagon directly behind the locomotive, hauled by 'J37' 0-6-0 No 64577. The train is seen passing beneath the footbridge at West Ferry station which closed to passengers on 4 September 1967.
