Contents Listing - Articles & Features in this issue
rains of Thought Edwardian Express Locomotive Design Dilemmas: 1906 - Philip Atkins explores how the quintessential Victorian passenger locomotive evolved into the more functional, but more efficient, 20th century designs. Chester a€ GWR Lines - In Part 2 of our 3-part feature on Chester, Chris Andrews shows how the Great Western Railway extended its influence to the River Dee, in what was a bastion of all things L&NWR. STEAM DAYS in Colour 50: Stanier 'Jubilees' at work - To many, the Stanier 3-cylinder '5XP' or 'Jubilee' class locomotives were the finest looking 4-6-Os to run in this country. Enjoy seeing engines of the class at work during their last decade in British Railways service. The Fallowfield Line - Eddie Johnson provides a comprehensive account of an often overlooked Manchester outer-suburban route, the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway line from Fairfield to Chorlton Junction - the Manchester Central Station Railway. Out and About on 'The Brighton' - Neil Sphnks describes the character of the lines of the former London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, and recollects memories from the Southern Railway and BR days. Tail Lamp - Readers' Letters Cover: In this month's all-colour photo-feature we take a look at the last decade in service of the handsome Stanier '5XP' or 'Jubilee' class 4-6-Os. Here we find No 45631 Tanganyika of Saltley shed hustling an up freight through Skipton station towards Keighley in 1963. By this time engines of the class were being used more and more as mixed-traffic locomotives and they saw a lot of gainful employment on trains such as this, although they were not always maintained in the best of mechanical condition, witness the cylinder glands blowing badly. No 45631 Tanganyika was transferred to Crewe North shed during the week-ending 15 August 1964 and was withdrawn from service during the following week.

Camden-based 'Jubilee' No 45686 St Vincent is in charge of an up express on Castlethorpe troughs, on the approach to Wolverton, in August 1958, and as can be seen the fireman was a little late in winding up the water scoop. For the sake of the passengers in the leading coach one hopes that all the windows and ventilators are closed. Put into traffic in February 1936 from Crewe North shed this 'Jubilee' class 4-6-0 remained a Western Division locomotive all its working life. It was moved to Carnforth shed in January 1960 and was withdrawn from there in November 1962.
