ur 'Lineside Cameraman' this month is John Whiteley, and by the early part of 1963 he was studying for professional examinations, and he was given two separate mornings off from the office where he was working in order to attend daytime college. The temptation was just too great, and he often took the opportunity of having a few hours at the lineside, regularly in the Leeds area as this was readily accessible as by now he possessed his own set of wheels a€ a Vespa scooter which he came off more times than he cares to remember, but generally more shaken than hurt. Leeds Central, seen here, was a wonderfully atmospheric terminus which he remembers visiting as a young spotter in the mid-1950s, and what a delight it was to be greeted by a gleaming ex-LNER Pacific at the buffer-stop having arrived earlier from King's Cross, and awaiting to be released from its train before going to the nearby Copley Hill shed for servicing. Copley Hill's own Peppercorn 'A1' Pacifies were regulars at the terminus, and one of them is seen on 5 March 1963. No 60133 Pommern is seen struggling on the greasy rait with the 9.41am express to King's Cross. Leeds Central 'A' signalbox can be seen on the right.
