Contents Listing - Articles & Features in this issue

Trains of Thought Memories of Stirling and Perth - Summer 1964 - Through observations at Stirling and Perth, living Nicol recollects the pattern of operation as the Glasgow (Buchanan Street) to Aberdeen main line found itself enjoying a resurgence in steam passenger operation. Classic Enthusiasts' Rail Tours - THE LCGB goes AC! - In search of pastures new, Mike Turner recalls how the Locomotive Club of Great Britain saw the electrification of the West Coast main line from Euston in April 1966 as a fast-track to reach the steam-rich North-West. STEAM DAYS in Colour - 92: GWR 4-6-Os around Carmarthen and Swansea - West Wales was one of the more interesting areas served by the Western Region, with a wide variety of express, mixed traffic and fast goods duties, many of which were handled by ex-GWR 4-6-0s well into the 1950s. Locomotives of the Hull & Barnsley Railway - One of the smaller of the pre-Grouping companies, the H&BR owned an interesting collection of motive power, as Jan Ellerby explains. Steam Days at Horsham - Stanley Jenkins examines the creation of an LB&SCR rail centre, follows the Southern Railway investment in electrification, and considers the subsequent demise of the town's steam-hauled passenger services and ultimately of all the routes that missed out on pre-war investment. Tail Lamp - Readers' Letters Cover: Immaculate Gresley "A4" Pacific No 60034 Lord Faringdon is pictured near Fetteresso as it climbs away from Stonehaven on an Up Strathmore route express from Aberdeen to Glasgow (Buchanan Street) in June 1966. The so-called swansong of the Gresley streamliners on this former LMS route spanned the years from June 1962 until September 1966, as enjoyed by author Irving Nicol during 1964. No 60034 was amongst the last of the class in action, as it would soldier on from Aberdeen (Ferryhill) shed into August 1966.
