From 'The Railway Through Uttoxeter' : Pinfold Crossing on 19th August 1961, looking towards Uttoxeter with the 6.07pm ex-Derby to Crewe service passing. The train consists of two 2-car Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. (BRC&W) built diesel multiple units, the headcode B6 being the normal one for the Derby to Crewe trains at that time. This form of train designation was introduced when diesel units took over local train services but it had a comparatively short life, soon to be replaced by the four character head codes still in use today, although no longer carried on the trains. Although the BRC&W units were the norm on these trains at this date, it was 3-car units that were the staple power, making this formation relatively unusual. The leading power car is designated M50537; providing it had maintained its correct formation, the trailer car attached would be M53537. At the time this set was allocated to Crewe, as would have been the 2-car unit behind. The small subsidiary signal, bracketed onto the Pinfold home signal and Hockley Crossing distant, controlled entry into the Down loop between this box and Hockley.
