THE NEWS and information contained in Railscene comes from a number of sources. Most publicly significant events are described in BR press releases and other official handouts. Events such as line Or station closures become common knowledge from the posters and press announcements prepared by BR, in compliance with a number of statutory obligations, in giving notice of its intentions. The MRP editorial staff receive information from many acquaintances and colleagues but with a rail system as large as BR these sources are limited in the ground they cover. Above all else, it is the readers of MRP and other Ian Allan magazines who provide details of novel and interesting workings. Obviously, the quality of the news appearing in Railscene reflects not only the volume of news items received, but the accuracy of the information given. By notifying us of interesting workings, other readers can share your news and be kept up to date with the latest happenings. All information used in Railscene is credited to the informant. The response to a previous editorial which contained a request for interesting and newsworthy photographs of any topical event on BR was very successful and whether it is a locomotive naming, failure, working or livery change, regular photographic contributors are normally 'on the spot' to record the event. With some of the particularly rare or unusual workings a photograph confounds the sceptics and confirms that the reported event took place. Topical photographs for use in MRP or other lan Allan magazines are always welcome. It is important that all information submitted is accurate. Locomotive numbers, for example, should be carefully recorded and a working should not he-described as unusual unless it occurs irre^dnrly. In an effort to provide the latest information covering significant events, would readers please send any contributions to the News Editor, Modern Railways Pictorial, Ian Allan Ltd, Terminal House, Shepperton TW178AS.

In the February issue, Railrover visits the city of Carlisle, we report on a blizzard at Swindon, feature diesels on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and have a close look at the SR Class 508s before they begin to be transferred to the LMR. Plus all our regular features including Les Nixon's Photoguide. Keep up to date with MRP — available on and from the the 12th of every month!
