A telephone call out of the blue led to Stanley Hall being told to pack his bags and move from the north east to a new job at Peterborough. Thus, 1959 was the start of a three-year association with the railway city in charge of one of the busiest parts of the Eastern Region's network. Keeping the trains running was also David Heal's task, based in control at Redhill, where he spent 10 years. Meanwhile, on the footplate at Fratton, George Blakey has been promoted to the 'Dual Gang' and spends a summer season working from Nine Elms. Still on the footplate, over at Colchester during the Second World War, Nobby Gooding has become a fireman, but with the blackout and bombs, life isn't easy. For 'spotters, a visit to Swindon works was always a treat, and anticipation was heightened by chance of a rare 'cop'. Join us as we take a typical visit in the 1950s. However, within a decade Western Region steam was over and two, days before the end of steam on the Western Region we join 'Bill Piggott at Oxford for a final day's observation. This month we're also joining 'spotter Norman Roycroft at Derby as the LMS gives way to BR at nationalisation, while driver Brian Topping continues his examination of LMS 2-6-4TS. - There's so much to enjoy this month, so let's not delay a moment longer!
