Cover: On 3 October 1959 the 12.45pm Norwich Thorpe-Liverpool Street train shuts off for a permanent way restriction near Chelmsford, with 'Britannia' Pacific No 70001 Lord Hurcomb In charge. In this Issue of Steam Days, in our 'Know your trains' series of articles, we feature passenger train formations, and one of the less usual examples was to be found on the Great Eastern main line in the late 1950s / early 1960s when the Liverpool Street-Ipswich-Norwich express sets were made up with the brake vehicles towards the centre of the train to aid loading or unloading at intermediate stations. The Ministry of Transport usually frowned upon non-brake vehicles forming the ends of a train set as the van's length of a brake vehicle offered some protection In an accident.
