rains of Thought Steam Days at Stafford - This month Stanley Jenkins takes a look at a busy railway centre on the West Coast main line between Lichfield and Crewe, and where lines from Birmingham, Shrewsbury, Stoke on Trent and Uttoxeter converged in the days of steam, and studies the traffic and motive power seen in the area. The Annandale Route into Scotland - David Anderson traces the history of the Caledonian Railway's Anglo-Scottish main line from Carlisle to Carstairs Junction which passed over the famous Beattock Summit, and describes the stations along this route. Lord Exeter's Stamford & Essendine Railway - The interesting history of the Great Northern Railway lines from Stamford in Lincolnshire to both Essendine and Wansford is studied this month by A. J. Ludlam. Named Locomotives and their Origins The Round Table 'King Arthur' class 4-6-0s - Andrew Wilson singles out those Southern 'King Arthur' class engines which were named after King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table. He reminds us of the legends surrounding these characters, and provides interesting information on the locomotives after which they were named. South Wales Sheds in the 1930s - Ken Davies was a prolific photographer of Great Western locomotives for the RCTS over the years, particularly in Wales, as seen in the August 2002 issue of this magazine, and John Hodge, who holds his collection of negatives, puts together another photo-feature depicting Ken's South Wales exploits. Tail Lamp a€ Readers' Letters Cover: This month we take a look at the GNR lines from Stamford in Lincolnshire to Essendine and Wansford. For many years the Essendine line was worked by 'C12' 4-4-2Ts, and No 67394 of this class is pictured at Stamford Town station with an Essendine train on 31 May 1958 after the Essendine trains started running from this former Midland Railway station following the closure of Stanford East (GNR) in March 1957. Note the attractive pale local stonework of the station buildings.
