Trains of Thought The Moretonhampstead Branch - Chris Andrews looks at this iconic Devon branch line that ran from Newton Abbot and was closed to passengers by British Railways in February 1959, despite vehement opposition from those who used it. ... and sometimes I took the Low Road! - John Macnab follows up his memories from Falkirk (High) to Glasgow (Queen Street) with recollections of the alternative route, from Falkirk (Grahamston) to Glasgow (Buchanan Street) - on the Low Road! STEAM DAYS in Colour 62: Southern Region Seaside Termini - Serving as it did numerous seaside resorts ranging from the Atlantic coast of Cornwall and Devon in the west to the Thames estuary and Cinque Port in the east, the Southern Region ran an equally diverse range of trains to serve the needs of locals and holidaymakers. Enjoy visiting a selection of these termini during their steam days swansong. LNER Class 'D9' 4-4-0s - Bill Aves describes the development of J. G. Robinson's first 4-4-Os for the Great Central Railway, the '11 B' class, and their evolution and work from 1901, through LNER days, to 1950. Steam Days at Birkenhead - At the top of The Wirral, across the River Mersey from Liverpool, the massive dock development in and around Birkenhead ensured that it would become a rail centre of great importance. Stanley Jenkins explains how it attracted the GWR, L&NWR, MS&LR and CLC and gave birth to the Mersey and Wirral railways. Tail Lamp - Readers' Letters Cover: In this month's STEAM DAYS magazine our colour feature looks at some of the seaside termini of the Southern Region. With resorts ranging from Bude to Swanage and Padstow to Dover, it was perhaps the railway system on the Isle of Wight that served the greatest number of picture postcard termini. One of the most delightful of these was Ventnor, surrounded as it was by sheer cliffs, which immediately drew comparisons with a Roman amphitheatre. On Friday, 3 September 1965 Adams '02' class 0-4-4T No W22 Brading awaits departure from Ventnor with a train for Wroxhall, Shanklin and Sandown.

On the last day of steam on the nearby Ramsgate line, Stewarts Lane allocated Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' class Light Pacific No 34085 501 Squadron is pictured at Dover (Marine) station on Sunday, 14 June 1959 when in charge of the 'Golden Arrow'. Dover (Marine) was an impressive station and its association with the cross-Channel ferries added to the air of excitement generated by continental holidays. In this view, even the usually murky English Channel has taken on the hue of warmer climes. No 34085 was rebuilt in May/June 1960 and was to remain in traffic until 26 September 1965.
