SINCE the demise of the Class 52 'Western' and Class 55 'Deltic' locomotives, the 'English Electric' D400s or Class 50s (their TOPS numerical classification) have become without doubt the most followed diesel locomotive in operation. From their introduction during 1967/68 until 1972/74 they worked from Crewe depot at the head of West Coast
Main Line services. Single locomotives were used until May 1970, and new accelerated schedules commencing from that date resulted in the employment of pairs of Class 50s on Anglo-Scottish services. With the British Railways Board's decision to phase out the Western Region diesel hydraulic classes during the 1970s, it was decided that they would be replaced by these powerful 2,700hp Type 4 diesel electric locomotives. When first allocated to WR the Class 50s were not wholly accepted by the crews — or enthusiasts — their presence being resented as they were responsible for the demise of the much-loved 'Westerns'! The performance of the Class 50s on the WR did not meet required reliability levels and their deficiencies culminated in the refurbishing programme for the class undertaken by BREL Doncaster Works. Effectively the locomotives have been rebuilt using the basic shell.

In 1978, a decision was made to name the WR's 'new' main line motive power after ships and shore establishments of the Royal Navy, a number of the names having been carried previously on the Class 42/43 'Warship' diesel hydraulics. Naming and the repainting of the majority of refurbished locomotives in the striking special duties livery have combined to raise interest in the fleet to a remarkable extent. Today the class is widely employed and more so than when first allocated to WR. '50s' operate regularly on the Paddington to West of England, Bristol, Birmingham, Worcester, Hereford, Waterloo-Exeter and inter-Regional services. - The next Modern Railway Pictorial Profile"— No 5, will cover Classes 56/58, the purpose-built Railfreight locomotives. It will be published on 12 April 1984.
